History of Popular Music

Description

History of Popular Music is an interactive data visualization that explores the evolution of popular music between 1965 and 2010. Based on the Billboard Hot 100, it reveals how genres and emotional content in song lyrics have changed over the decades. The goal of the visualization is not only to highlight trends over time but also to allow users to discover individual songs and artists behind the data

Genre

Emotions

This visualization assigns songs to different genres such as rock, hip-hop, pop, or jazz and shows during which periods these genres were particularly popular.

The number of songs varies from year to year due to missing song data. In addition, genre classification is based on AI-assisted audio analysis and may contain occasional inaccuracies. The underlying data comes from the study "The Evolution of Popular Music" by Mauch et al.

The emotional impact of each song's lyrics was analyzed using AI-based emotion detection. The AI assigns a score between 0 (does not apply at all) and 1 (applies completely) to indicate how strongly a song relates to each of the five emotions.

The visualization displays the intensity of these emotions over time. As a starting point, the threshold was set to the average of all emotional values across all songs. This reference value helps avoid assigning songs to emotions arbitrarily—after all, with a threshold of 0, every song would match every emotion.

You can use the slider to adjust the threshold manually. The higher the threshold, the stronger the emotional relevance a song must have to be included. This allows you to easily discover which songs evoke a particular emotion most strongly.
